On this day, October 26, 1947, Jammu and Kashmir was merged with India. On that day, the then Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, Hari Singh, had signed the Instrument of Accession. Following this, Maharaja Hari Singh sought help from the Indian Army to fight Pakistan-backed forces in Kashmir.

The merger was accepted by the then Governor General of India, Lord Mountbatten, on 27 October 1947, a day after Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession. Only after this it was said in the Constitution that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India.

Pakistan-backed tribals attacked Kashmir
In the early hours of October 24, 1947, thousands of tribals attacked Kashmir. It is said that there were also Pakistani soldiers disguised as tribals. In such a situation, Maharaja Hari Singh asked India for help. But until then, as Jammu and Kashmir had not become part of India, the Indian Army could not help Kashmir.

Pakistan monitors Kashmir
After independence, when Pakistan separated from India, it became an independent country. At that time Muhammad Ali Jinnah had his eyes set on Kashmir. He believed that Kashmir is Muslim-majority and therefore Pakistan should have the right over it. This is the reason why they attacked the tribals in Jammu and Kashmir.

Hari Singh sought help from India after tribal attack
After the tribal attack, Maharaja Hari Singh left for Jammu from Srinagar at 2 pm on 25 October. After this he sent a message that he was ready to sign the Instrument of Accession with India. On October 26, he signed the Instrument of Accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India.

Indian Army had reached Kashmir after merger
Subsequently, on October 27 for the first time, the Indian Army advanced towards Kashmir and landed by plane at Srinagar airstrip. With this merger, the Indian Army took command in Jammu and Kashmir. Indian troops reached Srinagar on October 27. He liberated Kashmir from invaders.
