Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pajeshkian on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, on Tuesday. This was Pajeshkian’s first meeting with Prime Minister Modi after his victory in the July snap elections. The meeting discussed the needs for peace in West Asia and the role of India.
There was also talk of tension between Israel and Iran. Prime Minister Modi also invited President Pajeshkian to visit India, which the President accepted. The two leaders also discussed measures to strengthen cooperation in key areas, including the Chabahar port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).

Speaking to the media, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, “The two leaders also discussed the situation in West Asia. Prime Minister Modi expressed deep concern over the growing conflict and expressed India’s commitment to ensure the safety of civilians and prevent harm to civilians. He reiterated the call and highlighted the need for dialogue and diplomacy to reduce tensions.
Call to resolve disputes through dialogue and diplomacy
External Affairs Minister Vikram Misri said the talks between the leaders were good. During the debate on the situation in West Asia, Prime Minister Modi expressed serious concern over the growing conflict and pleaded for the safety of civilians. He stressed the need for dialogue and diplomacy to reduce tension.
India can play a role in reducing conflict
President Pajeshkian highlighted the need for peace and harmony in the region and said that India can play an important role in reducing conflict due to India’s good relations with all stakeholders. Prime Minister Modi congratulated President Pajeshkian on his recent victory and expressed his commitment to deepening the longstanding bilateral relations with Iran.

Important discussion on Chabahar port
The two leaders also discussed measures to strengthen shared historical ties. The meeting specifically discussed the importance of Chabahar port and INSTC, which are important for regional connectivity and economic partnership. Emphasis was placed on the role of Chabahar port in the reconstruction of Afghanistan and in promoting trade and economic relations with Central Asia.
