Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024: The Maharashtra assembly elections are approaching. With the announcement of the election date by the Election Commission, efforts have been launched to resolve the issue of seat distribution between the opposition and coalition parties. Vasai seat of Palghar district is also an important seat among the 288 assembly seats of Maharashtra. Independent candidates have more dominance than parties in this seat. Ten assembly elections have been held here so far, of which an independent candidate has won four times, while Bahujan Vikas Aghadi has won the last two here.

Hitendra Thakur’s dominance in the seat

Vasai assembly seat has been governed by Hitendra Thakur from 1990 till now except 2009 elections. He has either contested as a Congress candidate or as an independent candidate. In 2009, Narayan Mankar had contested the elections from here on the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi ticket. It is said that if Hitendra Thakur had been in the field, he would have won in 2009 too. This time too, the victory of Hitendra Thakur from Vasai is considered certain.

What has been the electoral history?

If we look at the electoral history of Vasai, the Janata Party won here twice and the Congress won twice. Additionally, independent candidates won four times. Bahujan Vikas Aghadi founder Hitendra Thakur has won here the last two times. Previously, Hitendra Thakur had won as a Congress candidate in 1990, while in 1995, 1999 and 2004, he had won contesting elections as an independent.

According to 2019 data, out of a total of 2 lakh 84 voters in Vasai seat, which belongs to the unreserved category, around 38,500 are Christian voters. In addition, around 24,000 Muslim voters also decide the fate of the candidates. The number of Dalit voters is around three per cent, while tribal voters are around 10 per cent.
