Cyclonic storm ‘Dana’ is moving towards the coast at very high speed.

The strong cyclonic storm ‘Dana’ formed in the Bay of Bengal is moving towards the coast at very high speed. Dana may reach between Puri in Odisha and Sagar Island of West Bengal at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour from the evening of October 24 to the morning of October 25, for which the Meteorological Department has issued an alert. Tension between these two states has increased. The Indian Coast Guard said on Tuesday that it is on “high alert” and has deployed its ships and aircraft to deal with any contingency arising from the cyclonic storm.

Storm will make landfall here

The storm will make landfall at Puri in Odisha and Sagar Island in West Bengal. India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra said the entire east coast from Puri to West Bengal coast is expected to be affected by cyclonic storm ‘Dana’. According to the IMD, the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to develop into a cyclonic storm and cross the coasts of northern Odisha and southern West Bengal between Puri and Sagar Island on the morning of October 25. During this period, strong winds will blow at a speed of 100 to 110 kilometers per hour, which can reach up to 120 kilometers per hour.

These states will be affected

In West Bengal, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places in East and West Medinipur, South 24 Parganas and Jhargram districts on October 24 and 25. The weather office also said that heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur in Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, Purulia and Bankura districts on October 24 and 25.

The IMD has issued an orange alert (prepare to act) for heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) with thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places in Kendrapara, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Kandhamal and Gajapati districts. Additionally, yellow storm alert with heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) and lightning has been issued for isolated places in Bhadrak, Balasore, Jajpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar ( Caution ) has also been published.

800 cyclone shelter centers ready

The Odisha government has prepared around 800 cyclone shelter centres, where people evacuated from sensitive areas will be accommodated. So far, authorities have visited 250 cyclone shelter centres, where people will be kept after evacuation. Arrangements for food, water, medicine, electricity and other essential items were made for people evacuated from various areas due to the cyclonic storm. In addition to the 800 cyclone shelter centres, an additional 500 temporary shelter camps have been set up in schools and colleges.

Schools and colleges closed for 3 days

In the official order issued by the Odisha government, it is said that all schools, colleges, universities and technical colleges in Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Angul, Nayagarh, Los Cuttack and Khurda districts/vocational institutes, polytechnics and ITIs will remain closed for three days (October 23 to 25). Necessary instructions have been given to the heads of various educational institutions in these 14 districts.

West Bengal Chief Minister said her government is prepared to face the wrath of Cyclone ‘Dana’. He said in Kolkata: “As a precautionary measure, all schools in seven districts will remain closed from October 23 to 26. We don’t want to take any risks. “Schools and universities are sometimes used as shelters for people.”

Helicopters and ‘remote operating stations’ deployed

The Indian Coast Guard said in a statement that it is on “high alert” and its dedicated personnel and resources are ready to provide assistance, rescue and relief. “The Coast Guard has strategically deployed its ships and aircraft to quickly respond to any emergency,” the statement said. The Coast Guard has deployed helicopters and “remote operating stations” at Haldia in West Bengal and Paradip in Odisha to periodically disseminate weather warnings and safety advisories to fishermen and sailors.

These trains were cancelled.

Given the threat of Cyclonic Storm Dana, more than 150 express and passenger trains passing through the Southeast Railway (SER) area have been cancelled. South-East Railway official said the canceled trains include Howrah-Secunderabad Falaknuma Express, Kamakhya-Yesvantpur AC Express, Howrah-Puri Shatabdi Express, Howrah-Bhubaneswar Shatabdi Express and Howrah-Yesvantpur Express. The head of the SER said that the canceled trains were scheduled to leave their stations of origin from October 23 to 25. Fishermen are advised not to go to sea until October 23-25

So far, NDRF has deployed 13 teams in West Bengal to deal with any emergency. The Meteorological Department has advised fishermen not to go to sea from October 23 to 25. It has said that the wind speed on the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal is expected to reach 60 kilometers per hour and will gradually increase thereafter. Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi has ordered complete evacuation of sensitive areas to ensure that no person is injured due to the cyclone.

Kolkata airport is also preparing

The Odisha government has also prepared a list of pregnant women who might give birth in the next 15 days. These women are being transferred to a nearby hospital so that they can avoid any difficulties during the disaster. Some people are unwilling to leave their homes for fear of being robbed. In such a situation, the police have been instructed to intensify patrols in those villages where people will be shifted to cyclone shelter centres. Kolkata airport authorities have started preparations to deal with any emergency as cyclonic storm ‘Dana’ is expected to pass through the coastal areas of West Bengal and Odisha on October 25.
