Pope Francis’ special envoy for peace in Ukraine, Cardinal Matteo Maria Juppi, has returned to Italy after a trip to Russia from October 14 to 16, the Holy See press office announced on Thursday.
This was the second visit to Russia by Cardinal Juppi, archbishop of Bologna and president of the Italian Episcopal Conference, which was also attended by an official from the Vatican Secretariat of State.
According to a statement from the Holy See press office, the visit “offered the opportunity to examine some possibilities to continue humanitarian cooperation and open the way to the long-desired peace.”
During the visit to Russia, Cardinal Juppi met with several government officials, including Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Foreign Policy Advisor Yuri Ushakov, Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova, and the Presidential Commissioner for Human Rights, Tatiana Moskalkova.

“The debates provided the opportunity to evaluate the progress made so far in the return of minors to their families and in the exchange of prisoners, wounded and remains of the dead,” said a statement issued by the Pontifical Press Office.
Cardinal Juppi also met with Bishop Anthony of Volokolamsk, president of the Department of Foreign Ecclesiastical Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate. During this meeting, humanitarian and philanthropic issues were discussed.
