The Beirut Barracks bombings were a series of suicide attacks that occurred in Beirut, Lebanon, on October 23, 1983. The US Marines killed in the explosion, who were part of the multinational force in Lebanon, were part of a peacekeeping mission during the Lebanese civil war. The US Marines were stationed at the Beirut International Airport Marine Barracks when the attack occurred.

Civil war broke out in Lebanon in 1975. A multinational force (MNF) was deployed there to end long-standing instability and restore peace. On August 20, 1982, a multinational force including 800 US Marines was ordered to Beirut to assist in a military peacekeeping operation during the Lebanese Civil War. French soldiers were also present there.
Two explosions occurred one after another.
On October 23, a Lebanese terrorist drove his bomb-laden truck into three guard posts and the lobby of a Navy barracks in Beirut and detonated it. 241 US service members were killed in this suicide attack. That same morning, another suicide terrorist attack killed 58 French soldiers in their barracks two miles away. Both explosions occurred within a few minutes of each other.
The group that carried out the incident was linked to Hezbollah
These attacks are alleged to have been carried out by a terrorist group called Islamic Jihad, linked to Iran and Hezbollah. A total of 307 people were killed in these attacks in Beirut. Among them were 241 Americans, 58 French military personnel, six civilians and two attackers.

Accused of Beirut barracks explosion dies this year
Last month, Israeli forces killed Ibrahim Akil, a top Hezbollah military commander, in Beirut, the Lebanese capital. Hezbollah confirmed Akil’s death. This same Ibrahim Akil is said to have been involved in the explosion of a truck at the American barracks in 1983. The United States was searching for this for a long time.
