Short Diwali 2024: Narak Chaturdashi is celebrated a day before Diwali. It is also called Chhoti Diwali. On this day, Yamraj, the god of age, is worshiped. Worshiping Yamraj is said to grant the blessing of beauty and longevity. Lord Shri Krishna is also worshiped on this day, because on that day he killed Narakasura. This time there is a lot of confusion regarding the date of Nakar Chaturdashi i.e. Chhoti Diwali. Some call 30th October and some call 31st October as Chhoti Diwali.

This year, Narak Chaturdashi will begin on October 30 at 1:15 p.m. It will end the next day, October 31 at 3:52 p.m. On Narak Chaturdashi, lamps are donated at night. Therefore, Narak Chaturdashi will be celebrated on October 30 only.
Why is Narak Chaturdashi celebrated?
According to mythological beliefs, on this day Lord Shri Krishna saved the universe from his wrath by killing Narakasura. Shri Krishna, with the help of Satyabhama, killed Narakasura and freed the gods and saints from their terror. To celebrate, people lit lamps in their homes and the tradition of celebrating the holiday began. It is said that since then the festivals of Narak Chaturdashi and Chhoti Diwali began to be celebrated. It is believed that people started worshiping Satyabhama considering her a form of Narayani.
Chhoti Diwali Puja Method
On the day of Narak Chaturdashi or Chhoti Diwali, apply sesame oil and take bath early in the morning. On this day, there is a tradition of worshiping Lord Krishna, Hanumanji, Yamraj and Maa Kali. On the day of Narak Chaturdashi, worship should be performed facing northeast direction. During the puja time, set up Panchdevs, Shri Ganesh, Durga, Shiva, Vishnu and Suryadev at a stall. After this, bathe the Panchadevs with Ganga water. Then apply tilak with roli or sandalwood.
Offer them incense, lamps and flowers and chant their avahana mantras. Janeu, Kalava, clothes and naivedya should be offered to all the gods. After this, recite mantras and praises to all the gods. The worship should end by performing Aarti. After worship, there is a tradition of lighting the Yama lamp on this day. A four-sided flour lamp is made and lit on the threshold of the house. Apart from this, lighting a lamp during the Pradosh period on Chhoti Diwali removes poverty and pain from the house.
Narak Chaturdashi 2024 auspicious time
There will be two auspicious times for worship on Narak Chaturdashi. The first Muhurta will be from 05:15 to 06:32 hours. After this, the bidding hours will be from 5:35 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. Donation and bathing also have a special significance on Chhoti Diwali. On this day, the good time to bathe is from 5:20 a.m. to 6:32 a.m. Abhijeet Muhurta is from 11:40 am to 12:30 pm, in which charity works can be done.

On this day, light a large one-sided mustard oil lamp at the main entrance of the house. Make sure you read Hanuman Chalisa on this day.
