A clash broke out between Left organizations and students of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad over alleged objectionable remarks about Lord Ram during the University Governing Council meeting at Jawaharlal Nehru University on Monday night.

The JNU Students Union alleged that ABVP members made casteist comments against JNUSU officials. JNUSU had called this meeting to discuss the issue of participating in the Internal Grievance Committee elections. The Internal Complaints Committee (CCI) is the body created to hear complaints of sexual harassment on the university campus.

JNUSU opposing the ICC

JNUSU has long opposed the formation of the ICC instead of the Gender Sensitivity Committee on Sexual Harassment (GSCASH). The university abolished GSCASH in 2017.

In a statement on Tuesday, JNUSU alleged that ABVP members forcibly entered the UGBM meeting, climbed on stage, assaulted and threatened its members.

blame each other

Student organizations blame each other for the dispute. Left organizations issued a statement saying that ABVP people always force their way into UGBM meetings and create ruckus. The organization said JNUSU president Dhananjay, vice-president Avijit Ghosh and joint secretary Mohammed Sajid, along with other students, were also harassed. Caste-based abuses were hurled at him and Dhananjay was even called despicable.

JNUSU said in the statement that ABVP members threatened Joint Secretary Sajid and said, “You too will be made Najeeb.” Let it be known that Najeeb Ahmed was a JNU student, who went missing from his hostel in 2016 and has not been found till date. The meeting continued until two thirty in the morning.

ABVP statement on the controversy

ABVP said Left organizations made derogatory comments against Lord Ram. ABVP said in a statement that a Left member of JNU UGBM condemned the derogatory comments made against Prabhu Shri Ram. Left organizations also made objectionable comments about Savarkar ji during his speech.
