Islamabad: Senior military commanders of Pakistan and Russia have met. During the meeting, both countries resolved to strengthen their cooperation in the security and defense sectors. Russian Deputy Defense Minister Colonel General Alexander V Fomin met separately with the heads of Pakistan’s three services to discuss ways to improve defense ties.
Cooperation in defense and security will be promoted
A statement issued by Pakistan Army’s media wing ‘Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR)’ said that during the meeting with Army Chief General Asim Munir, both sides discussed regional security issues and mutual interests, including them: General Munir reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening traditional defense ties with Russia. “The meeting also included joint military exercises and technical support for equipment of the PAF,” the statement said.
Pakistan wants to become a member of BRICS
Meanwhile, let us also say here that Pakistan seems eager to become a BRICS member country. Pakistan has appealed to Russia to be part of the group. In this sense, the president of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, and the president of the Russian Federation Council, Valentiny Matvienko, held a meeting in which they discussed joining the BRICS.

It may be noted that Pakistan applied for BRICS membership last year but did not receive the invitation to the BRICS meeting held in Kazan. Pakistan neither gained membership nor received dialogue partner status. Pakistan has been kept out of BRICS due to opposition from India. India has opposed Pakistan joining the BRICS. (Language)
