Troop withdrawal in final stages
A patrolling agreement on the LAC was signed between India and China ahead of the BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia. The situation before 2020 was agreed between the two countries. Following the agreement, disengagement of troops from two flashpoints called Demchok and Depsang in eastern Ladakh is in the final stages.
In compliance with the agreements between both sides, Indian troops had started withdrawing their equipment from these areas. Regarding the related process, an official said that the withdrawal from both flashpoints is in the final stage.
This process comes after the agreement between the two countries on patrolling and disengagement of troops on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. This is an important step forward to end the stagnation that has lasted more than four years. Relations between the two Asian powers deteriorated following the fierce clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020. It was the most serious military conflict between the two sides in decades. Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping approved the agreement related to patrolling and troop disengagement along the LAC in eastern Ladakh during their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia on October 23 .
