Why is Kali Puja celebrated in Bengal?
A mythological story prevails in Bengal about the worship of Mother Kali on the day of Diwali, according to which once the atrocities of demons like Chand-Mund and Shumbha-Nishumbh etc. had increased greatly. After which he started a war with the gods to capture even Indralok. Then all the gods approached Lord Shiva and prayed him to get rid of the demons. Lord Shiva revealed Amba, a form of Mother Parvati. To kill these demons, Mother Amba took the terrible form of Mother Kali and killed all the demons who were committing atrocities. After that, the very powerful demon Raktabeej arrived there.

Raktabeej was a demon whose blood, as soon as a drop of it fell to the ground, created a new demon from that blood, which is why it was called Raktabeej. To kill Rakta Beej and prevent the birth of another Rakta Beej, Mother Kali stuck out her tongue and attacked Rakta Beej with her sword and started drinking his blood before he fell to the ground. In this way Raktabeej was killed but Mother Kali’s anger did not subside. It had a tendency towards destruction. Seeing this form of Mother Kali, it seemed that she would now destroy all creation. As soon as Lord Shiva realized this, he lay down silently on the path of Mother Kali.
Maa Kali is a part of Lord Shiva, that is why she is also called Ardhanarishwar. It is also called Infinite Shiva because no one can understand it. When Mother Kali moved forward, her foot fell on the chest of Lord Shiva. As soon as her feet touched Anant Shiva’s chest, Mother Kali was shocked because she saw that it was Lord Shiva in person. His wrath ended immediately and he blessed all living beings in the world. Therefore, Mother Kali is worshiped on the new moon day of the Kartik month.
