Counting of sheep and goats began in the country
In India, where the government conducts a “census” to count humans. Now the counting of livestock like cows, buffaloes, sheep and goats has also started in the country. The central government has set a target of completing this work in five years and has also prepared a robust budget for it.
This is the twenty-first time in the country that the government has conducted a livestock census. It was recently started by Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan and this work will have to be completed by February 2025 i.e. in just 5 months. This is also expected to create employment on a large scale.
Rs 200 crore budget for counting sheep and goats
The government has maintained a budget of Rs 200 crore for the 21st livestock census. The data collected on livestock through the expenditure of this fund will provide the government with accurate information on the number of livestock, their health and other aspects. With this, the government will get adequate data to achieve good growth in the health and livestock sector.

Not only this, Fisheries, Livestock and Dairy Minister Rajiv Ranjan also launched a ‘Pandemic Fund Project’ worth $25 million (around Rs 211 crore). This fund will work to ensure their protection and health protection against the epidemic that spreads among animals.
What animals will be counted?
During this livestock census, the government will count 219 local breeds of animals of 16 species. This will count different species and breeds ranging from cows, buffaloes to sheep, goats and chickens. Not only this, the government will collect the data of the herdsmen separately, so that clear policies can be formulated for this community.
1 lakh jobs to be created
This 21st livestock census will be conducted at all India level. This will create many local jobs for field-level data collection. Their number can reach around 1 lakh. It is expected that the majority of these veterinarians or paravets will be hired.
