It is necessary to have an opposition that monitors the functioning of the government. However, what a strange situation it is when there is not a single opposition MLA in the House. Something similar will be seen in Sikkim. There will be no opposition MLAs in the Sikkim Assembly. The government has the support of 30 MLAs in the 32-seat assembly. At the same time, the ruling party won unopposed in the by-elections held in two assembly seats.
Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) candidates Aditya Gole and Satish Chandra Rai were elected unopposed on Wednesday in the by-elections held in Soreng-Chakung and Namchi-Singhithang assembly seats respectively. According to officials, Aditya Gole was the only candidate from Soreng-Chakung seat as Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) candidate Probin Hung Subba withdrew his nomination on Tuesday.
Candidates elected for both seats

Delivery of electoral certificate
Officials said Gole was elected unopposed and Soreng returning officer Dheeraj Subedi handed over the electoral certificate to him after the deadline for withdrawing nominations expired. SKM’s Satish Chandra Rai also collected the election certificate from Namchi returning officer Anupa Tamling. Satish Chandra Rai was elected unopposed in the by-election for the Namchi-Singhithang assembly constituency as he was the only candidate in the fray after SDF candidate Daniel Rai withdrew his nomination on Tuesday.
With the victory of Rai and Golay, the SKM equaled the records of the Sikkim Sangram Parishad (SSP) in 1989 and the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) in 2009, as both parties had won all 32 seats in the Sikkim Assembly. Sikkim Chief Minister and SKM president Prem Singh Tamang had urged the people of the state to elect the party’s 32 MLAs to accelerate development work in the Himalayan state.
