Doctors at AIIMS Hospital Bhubaneswar have made a major achievement in the medical world. Shubhkant Sahu, 25, from Odisha’s Nayagarh district, who was brought to the hospital in critical condition, had his heart stopped for 80 minutes when it was revived with the help of ECMO technology. This incident is considered a historic achievement in the medical field.
On the morning of October 1, Shubhakant was brought to AIIMS Bhubaneswar after severe breathing problems. His condition was critical and during treatment at 10 in the morning his heart suddenly stopped beating. Doctors attempted to restore the heartbeat by performing CPR for 40 minutes, but were unsuccessful. In this situation the doctors only had two options. Either by declaring them dead or resorting to ECMO technology.
ECMO saved life
ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) is a special medical device that temporarily replaces the heart and lungs. 40 minutes after Shubhkant was put on ECMO, his heart started beating again. However, his heart remained stopped for a total of 80 minutes, which is a miraculous event.

Shubhkant was kept on ECMO for 30 hours and then kept under observation on a ventilator for 2 weeks. Finally, Shubhkant regained consciousness and opened his eyes. Now his condition is normal and he is completely healthy.
