It was 2002, in the US state of Texas, Nikki Curtis, Robert Roberson’s two-year-old daughter, fell on the bed and became unconscious. Roberson took her to the hospital but the girl died a day later. It was found that he had suffered a serious head injury. Within a year, Roberson, 57, was tried for the murder of his daughter and sentenced to death.
Doctors and autopsies concluded that Nikki died due to “severe abuse” at the hands of Roberson, citing shaken baby syndrome as a major cause. A Texas committee that was reconsidering the validity of Roberson’s conviction summoned Roberson to attend a hearing on Monday, October 21.
The punishment would be given on Thursday.
However, Roberson did not arrive on Monday. He was scheduled to receive a lethal injection in Huntsville on Thursday afternoon at 6 pm local time, after the Texas State Board rejected his request for clemency on Wednesday of last week. Just hours before the death sentence was to be carried out, a Texas judge issued a temporary restraining order to stop it.
