It is clear from the trends in the Maharashtra Assembly elections that a Mahayuti government will once again be formed in the state. No one expected the kind of performance Mahayuti put up this time. Most exit polls predicted that Mahayuti would form a government in the state, but no one had predicted that he would get such a large mandate.
The lack of unity in the way the BJP, Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar fought these elections was clearly visible in the opposition’s Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA). While the grand alliance of BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP managed to convey their plans and ideas to the public, Mahavikas Aghadi witnessed infighting many times. Even in the midst of elections, there was continuous rhetoric about the CM post.
Ten great things about this election that became the reason for Mahayuti’s success and MVA’s defeat-
1. MVA Failed to Establish the Narrative: Mahavikas Aghadi seemed to lack a unifying electoral message as its allies focused on different issues.
2. Failed to take advantage of Maharashtra Pride: The alliance failed to capitalize on the spirit of “Maharashtra self-respect”.
3. Weak Manifesto: Aghadi’s manifesto reflected Mahayuti’s policies, in which no different point of view was seen.
4. Neglect of agricultural issues: Anger in rural areas for not paying enough attention to farmers’ problems around soybeans, cotton and onions.
5. Impact of Ladki Bahan scheme: Mahayuti’s specific planning greatly influenced female voters.
6. Effective Mahayuti Campaign: The solidarity of the advertisements and speeches refuted the accusations and strengthened the image of the Mahayuti.
7. Ignore the main problems: The Aghadis failed to effectively present before the public issues like the Malwan statue controversy and the Badlapur rape case.
8. Perception of Volatility: Voters preferred the current government to the possible instability of the coalition.
9. Mistake in attacking the BJP: Congress’s lukewarm response to BJP’s campaign blunders and false advertisements weakened the MVA’s position.
10. Weak sympathy towards Uddhav: Due to Uddhav Thackeray’s defensive strategy, public sympathy towards his party reduced.
Apart from this, Mahavikas Aghadi failed to maintain its tribal, Dalit, Muslim and Kunbi social composition, which disintegrated due to small parties and rebel candidates.
